First grade Planet Research
First graders can research too!! Yes, that is correct. This month all first graders choose a planet to find out about. They used nonfiction books, online databases like PebbleGo, and other free websites to find up-to-date facts about one of the planets. Using their artistic skills, they created the planet on a large poster board in a nonfiction way. We displayed them in the hallways so other students and staff members could learn some new facts!

Third INSECT Grade Research
This month third graders participated in a research project, collecting facts from reputable, online resources about a certain insect. Students learned about many insects, including the 17-Year Cicadas, which will be appearing this spring and summer!! Then they published their facts into Insect Cards, using the color printer and the laminator. Students in first grade will be able to use these fact cards to gain information when they visit the library in April.

Genius Time Projects
Fifth graders have been working on their Genius Time Projects during Library Class. First, we discussed PASSION, something you feel strongly about and you want to learn more about. Once they identified their PASSION, students decided on what they wanted to learn about their topic. While researching, some contacted expert people, some created models or games, while some performed a service. We will be presenting them to the entire school in an open house setting. Come learn what the fifth graders learned on their own!! COURAGEOUS LEADER March 2020

Research in 2nd grade
During 3rd quarter, students in second grade are developing their research skills by becoming a nonfiction author. Students are learning how to take notes, find facts from nonfiction books, find facts from databases, and find facts from reputable websites. They are compiling the things they learn into a nonfiction book that includes nonfictions drawings, labels, captions, and headings. Each student will donate their published book to the library and anyone can check it out!!

HOUR OF CODE
The Hour of Code was held the week of December 9-15, 2019. The Hour of Code is a world-wide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with a 1-hour coding activity. We did this during our library class. Different grade levels participated in different activities such as using the Kodable app, exploring with Ozobots and Dot & Dash robots, and using the Hour of Code website activities. Computer science helps develop problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity.

THE GLOBAL READ ALOUD
The kindergarten students at Moyer Elementary have started participating in the Global Read Aloud during library class time. Every year an author is chosen and students read several books by this author; this year it is Yuyi Morales. She is from Mexico and likes to incorporate English and Spanish in her picture books. After reading the stories, students are encouraged to connect globally with other children in a different part of the world. We will be connecting with kindergarten friends at a school in Miami, Florida. We will be sharing our thoughts about the books digitally, through email and post-it boards. We will also create bookmarks inspired by the books we readand send them by mail. Later in the month we plan to use Google Hangouts to “meet” the students in Florida. We will be able to see our new friends, talk with them, and ask questions about their state and school. We are Global Communicators!!

Digital Citizenship!
One of the goals of the Moyer Elementary Library is to have everyone be a good digital citizen and know how to protect themselves from people who choose not to be good digital citizens! Each grade level is working on digital citizenship skills during library class and many good conversations are starting. If you are a parent of a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader, look out for the Parent Pages coming home the first quarter to keep you up-to-date on what we are discussing in class so you can further the discussion at home.
